The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

GBIS helped many households with a single free insulation measure. It has now closed. This guide explains what it was, why it ended, and where to go now.

Last reviewed: August 2026

What GBIS was

A single insulation measure (loft, cavity, solid wall, room-in-roof or underfloor) for eligible homes: a low-income group on means-tested benefits, and a broader group in Council Tax bands A–D (A–E in Scotland/Wales) with EPC D or below.

Why it closed

GBIS closed to new applications on 31 March 2026. It is succeeded by the Warm Homes Local Grant from 2027.

Where to go now

Lower-income households: Warm Homes Local Grant (via council). All homeowners: 0% VAT on insulation/solar to March 2027, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for heat pumps.
